Walkden grew up as a coal mining town, and its oldest housing is the rows of brick terraces built in the years when the pits were working. Roofs of that age are typically slate, with brick chimney stacks and lead flashing that have been in place for a very long time.
Semi-detached houses and post-war estates make up much of the rest of the town, and newer developments have been added since, both here and in neighbouring Ellenbrook and Boothstown. Homes from those years generally have tiled roofs, mortar-bedded ridges and timber or uPVC roofline. We work on all of them.
We are based at 91a Walkden Road in Walkden, so Worsley, Little Hulton, Boothstown, Swinton and Farnworth are all a short drive.

Walkden has gone from a colliery town to a busy suburb of brick terraces, semis, post-war estates and new-build homes, and each kind of house tends to have its own roof faults. These are the jobs our roofers are called to most often across Walkden, Linnyshaw, Little Hulton, Worsley and Boothstown.
The brick terraces in the older streets of Walkden were mostly roofed in slate when they were built. The slates usually outlast the nails that hold them, so as the fixings corrode, slates slip out of line or fall away altogether. They can normally be re-fixed or swapped for matching slates without re-roofing the whole house. See our slate roofing.
A chimney stack takes more weather than any other part of a roof, and many in Walkden have not been touched for decades. Mortar joints open up and the lead flashing where the stack meets the roof lifts or splits, letting water run down to the chimney breast or the ceiling beside it. See our chimney repairs and lead flashing repairs.
On the tiled roofs of the semis and post-war houses in Walkden, the ridge tiles and verges were set in sand and cement. Frost, rain and wind wear that mortar away over the years, so ridge tiles work loose and gaps open along the roof edge. See our ridge tile repairs and dry verge systems.
Plenty of houses in Walkden have a front bay topped with a small roof of its own, in lead, felt or tile. If the covering splits or the joint where it meets the house wall opens up, the first sign is usually a damp patch on the ceiling or wall just inside the window. See our bay window roof repairs.
Flat roofs on garages, kitchen extensions and dormers around Walkden and Little Hulton are often still covered in old felt that has blistered, split or begun to hold water. Some only need patching; others are past that and are better re-covered. See our flat roofing.
Moss washing down from the roof and autumn leaves block gutters quickly. Once they overflow, water runs onto the timber fascias and soffits behind, and after a few wet winters the boards go soft and the gutter brackets start to pull away. See our gutter repairs and gutter cleaning.
